Why Be Part of
Out of the Ashes
The Only Educational
Program in Korah
Education plays a vital role in creating and maintaining a healthy, successful life, providing people with skills they need to overcome poverty, protect themselves from injustice, prevent disease, and live lives of freedom and opportunity. Educated citizens are citizens who are empowered to act as advocates for economic and social change. An educated population promotes a better-educated nation.
We Make 2-3 Trips
Every Year
Our trips offer a transformative opportunity to deepen your understanding of God’s heart for the poor while serving the community of Korah. Each trip provides a unique opportunity to engage with our students and staff of the OA community. We are here for the long term to educate and empower students to break the cycle of poverty in Korah.
Currently Sponsoring Over
250 Children in Korah
Real community transformation begins by investing in children. The encouragement of a sponsor affirms that each child has been created in the image of God, has been named, and has a story worthy of being heard! Sponsorship contributes to tuition, school uniforms, shoes, school supplies, food, spiritual guidance, community, school development, medical care, and more.
Out of the Ashes is an
International NGO
Out of the Ashes is an International non-governmental organization. It is registered under the Ethiopian Charities and Societies Agency with Reg. no. 4776. The organization was established in 2013. It partnered with an Ethiopian NGO until 2020 when they received their international license. It started with the vision of contributing to poverty reduction in Addis Ababa and bringing positive behavioral and social change through empowering children and families.
Sponsor a
child today
Sponsors are the backbone of the Out of the Ashes educational mission. A basic tenet of the OA sponsor program is the belief that a positive and supportive relationship between Student and Sponsor provides encouragement and guidance necessary for successful performance in school. To ensure each child has what he or she needs to permanently break the cycle of extreme poverty, our comprehensive program provides tuition, nutritious food, clothing, school supplies, personal care supplies, medical care, and counseling services.
About Our
mission trips
Mission trips are vital in supporting and encouraging our students and the community of Korah. Our trips tend to be fast-paced with a lot of focus on learning, loving and doing. We want you to connect with the community and the kids, build relationships, and understand how we can partner together to make a long-term impact. We are here for the long term to help educate and empower our students to break the cycle of poverty in Korah.
How to
get involved
Donate • Volunteer • Encourage
Our program has various needs that are not included on the sponsorship fees. You can help by sponsoring medical care, school supplies, supplemental food for summer, after-school tutoring, counseling, clothing and shoes, transportation, hygiene, or life skills training.
Where
we help
Out of the Ashes works with kids that have been labeled as “dump kids” from Korah Ethiopia. Korah is a leper colony of over 130,000 people, located inside the city limits of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Korah is directly adjacent to the city trash dump. Due to the extreme poverty in Korah, many families are simply unable to provide for their children. Lacking options, parents send their children (some as young as 6 or 7 years old) away to “work” in the “Koshe” ( trash dump) . The children often have had minimal or no schooling.
